New magazine on the US and its global impact launched

2 November 2009

The US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney has launched the inaugural edition of a new magazine on the contemporary United States and its global impact.

Titled American Review, the twice-yearly journal aims to bring international perspectives to analysis and commentary on United States politics, business and society.

"With our geographical position between Asia and America and our Anglosphere heritage, Australia is in a strong position to bring together innovative interpretations of the US," American Review editor Minh Bui Jones said. "We believe American Review will promote a diverse range of perspectives on US affairs and how they affect the world."

While the first issue focuses on President Obama, future issues will examine American society and culture more broadly from both American and international perspectives. Short pieces by leading commentators and think tank pundits will appear alongside reviews and longer articles focused on single issues.

According to chief executive of the US Studies Centre Professor Geoffrey Garrett the journal will be a key component in the Centre's mission of deepening understanding of the United States.

"'Global perspectives of the US' is the tag line of American Review. It is also indicative of the Centre's ambition to become the leading centre outside America on the US," Garrett said.

American Review will be available from November at selected local bookstores for $14.95.
